# 14 Oop's Porn: How Did That Happen!

http://www.porn-free.org/answer_popup.htm
"When I click on your site's pages, I'm getting porn & sex related pages popping up that aren't from your site - what's the deal with this?"
This page is part of our Frequently Asked Questions section
Author's response:
I encourage you to check your computer for "spyware" or "Adware" programs that may have infected your machine from the internet. These programs can perform what is known as "browser hijacking," which can include the launch of unwanted pop-up windows, insertion of artificial hyperlinks to offensive sites and altered behavior of the browser itself. They can also enable other spyware programs to download onto your machine. Since much of the text on our website is sexually related, you might imagine how this could interact with spyware that is supported by porn sponsors.
Browser hijacking is becoming more and more common. One friend's computer was so infected that it was acting like it had a demon! Within seconds of typing in my site address (porn-free.org) on Internet Explorer, several windows popped up with various sex/porn sites - none of which were my other windows came up containing various sex-related websites - none of which were my page.
It's easy to see how people might assume that our site is the source of the trouble. I've had to convince several justifiably irate persons that our site was not the source of the bizarre problems, but rather the source was a spyware/adware infection on their machine. It's no longer enough for the porn vendors to simply lure people via sex words and teasers on search engines. Now they use deceptive spyware to actively recruit and drag people into the porn, in many cases against their will!
I've personally experienced spyware infections and some are incredibly difficult to remove, even with the proper removal programs. I had to go to the extremes of having a professional clean the machine and in one case, reinstall Windows XP. These spyware programs can even defy the "System Restore" feature in Windows.
If you think your machine might have a spyware or adware infection, here are steps that might help in getting the problem resolved:
Download a free copy of "Ad-aware" from Lavasoft ( http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/ ) or another good spyware detection/removal program and run it on your machine to see if your computer has an infection. If it does, run the removal tool, reboot the machine and run the scan again to see if the previously removed spyware reinstalls itself. If it doesn't, you might be good to go. If it does, then seek help from a computer shop or professional who deals with spyware removal.
To prevent the spyware from getting on your computer in the future, consider purchasing a prevention program such as the "professional" or "plus" version of the Lavasoft Adaware program (see link above). (the free version only detects and removes the spyware; it doesn't prevent it). Also, be careful about what sources you are exposing your computer to. Common sources of spyware include free downloads, music files (ex. MP3), shareware and instant messaging.
